Is the best of both worlds possible? Can you have your cake and eat it too? Is there one binding that can tour like a tech binding and descend like an alpine binding? Apparently the answer to all three is a resounding “yes.” Brand new for this year, the 2019 Salomon S/Lab Shift binding can accommodate any boot for downhill skiing, and boots with tech fittings for uphill touring and backcountry skiing. They’ve done it, and now you can have it. There’s a lot going on with this binding, starting with the Dual Mode Toepiece. It’s MNC (Multi-Norm Certified) so that it can accommodate alpine, tech, and WTR soles. The long toe wings help hold the boot in place better than any other tech binding out there. Additionally, that toe piece is height-adjustable so you can switch out boots. When you’re lined up, simply step in like an alpine binding. A simple lever mechanism switches between alpine and tour mode and you can only tour with tech-fitted boots. The heel has self-retracting brakes for less drag and catch. The hike and ride switch is a little lever that toggles back and for the between hike and ski mode. Make sure you check that your boots will fit in for downhill mode, as some boots without full lugs will not fit into the Shift when it is in downhill mode. The 2019 Salomon S/Lab Shift MNC binding is the one binding that you need for both uphill and downhill performance.
