THOMAS EDISON. ANS: “E” in pencil, 1p, 5×7¾ lined sheet. No place, no date. To “Charles”. In full: “Looks as if they needed quick money”. Likely to his son, Charles Edison. Prolific inventor THOMAS ALVA EDISON (1847-1931) was the holder of over 1,000 patents, including the incandescent electric lamp, microphone, phonograph (his favorite invention) and alkaline storage battery. He incorporated Thomas A. Edison, Inc. in 1911 as an “umbrella” organization for his many companies. In 1926, Edison stepped down as President of Thomas A. Edison, Inc. to become Chairman of the Board. His second son, CHARLES EDISON (1890-1969), who had served as Chairman of the Board for a number of Edison companies, took over the presidency. Charles would later serve as FDR’s Secretary of the Navy (193901940) and Governor of New Jersey (1941-1944). Lightly creased with folds, horizontal folds touch the upper and lower portion of the “E”. ½-inch tear at upper left blank edge. Lightly shaded. Torn at upper edge from removal from pad.
