“OUTLINED AGAINST A BLUE-GRAY OCTOBER SKY, THE FOUR HORSEMEN RODE AGAIN. IN DRAMATIC LORE THEY ARE KNOWN AS FAMINE, PESTILENCE, DESTRUCTION AND DEATH. THESE ARE ONLY ALIASES. THEIR REAL NAMES ARE STUHLDREHER, MILLER, CROWLEY AND LAYDEN.” FOOTBALL: NOTRE DAME. Rare Photo Mount signed: “Best Wishes/to ‘Vosco’/Don Miller”, “My best regards/to Vosco,/Harry Stuhldreher”, “To Vosco/Every Good Wish/Jim Crowley” and “Good Luck/Vosco/Elmer Layden”. B/w, 4¼x5 overall, image 4×3 (two surfaces). A good quality newspaper photograph was affixed to the lower portion of a small sheet of graph paper. It was then signed by Notre Dame halfback DON MILLER (1902-1979), quarterback HARRY STUHLDREHER (1901-1965), running back JIM CROWLEY (1903-1986) and fullback ELMER LAYDEN (1903-1973). In an article datelined Polo Grounds, N.Y., October 18, 1924, sportswriter Grantland Rice reported on the football game he had seen the day before. He began: “Outlined against a blue-gray October sky, the Four Horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore they are known as Famine, Pestilence, Destruction and Death. These are only aliases. Their real names are Stuhldreher, Miller, Crowley and Layden. They formed the crest of the South Bend cyclone before which another fighting Army football team was swept over the precipice at the Polo Grounds yesterday afternoon as 55,000 spectators peered down on the bewildering panorama spread on the green plain below. A cyclone can’t be snared. It may be surrounded, but somewhere it breaks through to keep on going. When the cyclone starts from South Bend, where the candle lights still gleam through the Indiana sycamores, those in the way must take to storm cellars at top speed.
