QUEEN ELISABETH OF ROMANIA (ELISABETH OF WIED) Sad letter written to an American, lamenting her illness and loneliness Typed Letter signed (with handwritten note): “God bless you all and/kind thanks for every/loving thought./Elisabeth”. 8½x11,No place, no date, but with mailed from the Royal Palace, Bucharest, postmarked April 30, 1902. To Mrs. Rogers Young, Minneapolis, Minnesota. In part: “It was only yesterday I began to open the letters and packets I found here on my arrival. I felt so weak that I didn’t even look at them at first. And the lovely surprise was there and one from Marguerite. Oh but it was so sweet. The wonderful book with all the work and trouble and those lovely views and charming roses and yachts and waterfalls. And everything looks as tempting as possible. Oh how kind, how kind, to have taken all those pains and that beautiful river and everything. I shall look at it many times and fancy myself there, in those magnificent surroundings, in the midst of your sweet home, with its peaceful beauty, and the joy and comfort. Oh how I wish I might rest there. Yet oh but there are so many buts in my life, so very many. So many that I have learned to live only by the mind, and to enjoy things by the thought and imagination, which is so vivid that I fancy I can see and touch what I would see and touch. All my great suffering, all my loneliness on earth is to be turned into blessings for others. Those I have loved most are all gone, and I have very few ties left. I can’t say I have been quite on earth again since … More information available. Please contact us if you have questions. HFSID 23576
