PRINCESS HELENA AUGUSTA She writes this letter to a friend apologizing about not being able to attend a function because she is otherwise engaged Autograph Letter signed: “Helena” 2p, first page: 5½x7 second page: 4¾x4¾, affixed to 11¼x8 piece of paper. On stationery of the Cumberland Lodge, Windsor and dated Sunday. To “Dearest Dorothy -” In full: “Dearest Dorothy-/ Many thanks for yr. letter. I will gladly give my support as patroness to the Bazaar you recite. About [one word difficult to decipher] I am sorry to say I cannot open it, as i have/two functions, just about those dates!/ I am so sorry -/Always/ Ys. very affect”. Princess Helena Augusta (1846-1923) was the third daughter of Queen Victoria. Although she had a romantic relationship with Prince Albert’s librarian Carl Rulard, she married the impoverished German Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein. The princess was an active supporter of many charities. One of the founding members of the Red Cross, she was also the founding president of the Royal School of Needlework. Additionally, she served as the president of the Royal British Nurses’ Association. Letter: one vertical, and one horizontal fold. Worn and creased throughout. Toned. Paper to which letter has been adhered contains a photocopied version of the letter and typed captions.
