HARRY S TRUMAN and THOMAS L. EVANS Both men signed this 7×9 photo of the President shaking hands with his longtime friend and fundraiser Photograph signed: “Tom L. Evans”, “Harry Truman”. B/w, 7×9. Harry S Truman (1884-1972) served as 33rd U.S. President from 1945-1953. The former U.S. Senator from Missouri (1935-1945), who had been elected Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Vice President in 1944, assumed the presidency upon FDR’s death on April 12, 1945. Faced with the ordeal of ending WWII (1939-1945), Truman ordered the atomic bombings on Hiroshima (August 6) and Nagasaki (August 9). He fought the Cold War with the Truman Doctrine, a policy reducing Communist pressures on Greece and Turkey through economic and military aid. During his second term, Truman sent U.S. forces to South Korea to repel invading North Korean troops. After leaving the presidency, Truman returned to Independence, Missouri, where he wrote his memoirs and was actively involved in the creation and expansion of the Truman Library. Thomas Lynn Evans (1896-1970), owner of the Crown Drug Midwestern pharmacy chain and of Kansas City radio station KCMO, was a longtime friend and political ally of President Truman. In the 1920s Truman was Evans’ frequent guest for poker games at the 822 Club, a Republican-oriented club of Kansas City business leaders which Truman could not have afforded to join at the time. Evans contributed to Truman’s successful Senate campaign in 1940, and raised $100,000 for his 1948 Presidential campaign (almost $1 million in 2008 dollars). He later served as Secretary of the Truman Library. Fine condition. – Please contact us if you have any questions or require additional information. HFSID 169602
