PRESIDENT FERDINAND E. MARCOS (PHILIPPINES) Typed Letter signed as President of the Philippines Typed Letter signed: “F. E. Marcos”, 8×10½. Malacañang, Manila, 1966 December 16. On his Presidential letterhead to Barbara Stephens, Los Angeles, California. In full: “I received your letter dated November 15, 1966, and I am certainly pleased to send you back the ‘Time’ cover with autograph. [Item not included.] With my warmest regards to you. Sincerely yours”. Ferdinand Marcos (1917-1989) fought with US forces on Bataan, survived the subsequent “Death March”, escaped and waged guerrilla warfare against the Japanese. After World War II, he entered politics, serving as a federal legislator and Senate President before being elected President of the Philippines in 1965. Beginning as a reformer, Marcos resorted to heavy-handed corruption (symbolized by the extravagance of First Lady Imelda Marcos) and repression to retain power. He declared martial law and allegedly had key opponent Benigno Aquino assassinated. He was driven from power in 1986 by demonstrations after “officially” defeating Corazon Aquino, widow of the assassinated foe, in a presidential election. He died in exile in Hawaii. Malacañang Palace has been home to 18 Spanish Governors, 14 US Governors, and all but one of the Presidents of the independent Philippines. Multiple mailing folds. Binding holes at right edge. Toned at edges. Otherwise, fine condition. – Please contact us if you have any questions or require additional information. HFSID 23832
