Description

PAUL SIGNAC. ALS: “P. Signac”, 1p, 5¼x8. In French with English translation. La Hune, Saint Tropez, 1902 November 14. In full: “In my opinion, and as far as I am concerned at least, art and the Black Cat never have anything in common. You will agree, sir, the assurance of my very distinguished sentiments.” Signac was a leading member of the Neo-Impressionist School notable for a painting technique called Pointillism where minute juxtaposed dots of pure pigment, applied to the canvas, fuse into solid colors to create a continuous image through an optical illusion effect. Encouraged by Signac, in 1884, Georges Seurat turned away from the brushstrokes of the Impressionists, and became the leader of the Pointillist movement. After Seurat’s death in 1891, Signac became the acknowledged leader of the Neoimpressionists. Monogrammed in upper left. Fine condition. – Please contact us if you have any questions or require additional information. HFSID 217468
