LAURA INGALLS The aviatrix pens a modest reply to a request: “I wish that I had done something to really warrant sending you my autograph!” Autograph Note signed: “Laura Ingalls”, 4½x2 paper, mounted to 5½x3. In full: “I wish that I had done something to really warrant sending you my autograph! But here it is.” Laura Ingalls (1901-1967) learned to fly in 1928, and by 1930 was setting aerobatic records. She set a women’s record with 344 consecutive loops, and then broke it by doing 930. She also performed 714 barrel rolls, a record for both genders. After beating Amelia Earhart’s speed record for a transcontinental flight by a woman, she made an even more remarkable flight to and around South America, becoming the first woman to fly from North to South America, the first to fly over the Andes, and the longest aerial journey (17,000 miles). This journey earned her the Harmon Trophy as the outstanding female aviator of 1934. Ingalls became a popular speaker for the America First Committee and dropped leaflets on the White House demanding that the US stay out of World War II. In 1941, proven to have received large payments from the German Embassy, she was imprisoned for two years as an unregistered agent of a foreign government. Toned and creased. Adhesive residue show through at center. Signature and note light but legible. Irregularly cut edges. Otherwise, fine condition. – Please contact us if you have any questions or require additional information. HFSID 287854
