Schmitt/Apollo 17”. Color, 7¾x10 overall, 7¼x9¼ image, one surface. Captioned: “Astronaut Harrison H. Schmitt” Schmitt, born in Santa Rita, New Mexico in 1935, was the 11th man to walk on the Moon. He was aboard Apollo 17 and landed on the Moon on December 11, 1972, staying for a record 75+ hours. Schmitt graduated from the California Institute of Technology in 1957 and received his PhD in geology from Harvard University in 1964, making him the only trained scientist to date to walk on the Moon. Schmitt was also the second-to-last man to set foot on it on the Moon. The last man was Schmitt’s Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) mate Gene Cernan, who re-entered the LEM for the final time after Schmitt. Elected to the U. S. Senate from New Mexico as a Republican in 1976, he served from 1977 to 1983, losing reelection in 1982. Schmitt is married to the former Teresa Fitzgibbons. Lightly creased and toned.
