WALLACE WILKINSON The 57th Governor of Kentucky inscribes this 5×7 color photo to an admirer Inscribed Photograph signed: “Very Best Wishes/ to Alfred/ Wallace Wilkinson” in silver ink, color, 5×7. Wallace Wilkinson (1941-2002) was a businessman who served as the 57th Governor of Kentucky. While attending the University of Kentucky, Wilkinson started a retail business: The Kentucky Paperback Gallery in Lexington. His business was very successful as there was a huge demand for buying and selling used books at the University, and in 1965 he opened Wallace’s Book Store. Wilkinson eventually pursued other business interests, and he amassed a great amount of wealth. Entering into politics in the late 1970s, Wilkinson served on the Lexington Urban City Council and played an active role in the campaigns of several Democratic candidates. Wilkinson ran for governor of Kentucky in 1987, defeating John Harper. During his time as governor, Wilkinson established a state lottery and pushed for education reform, but his administration was plagued by suspicions of ethical misconduct and he ultimately only served one term. Wilkinson left office in 1991 and returned his attention to his various businesses. However, following the filing of a suit in 2001 by a group of creditors to whom he owed money, it came to light that he had been running a Ponzi scheme since 1992. Shortly afterward, he and his wife filed for bankruptcy. After suffering a stroke, Wilkinson was removed from life support in 2002. Show-through of the ink on front to verso. Ink note on verso in an unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition. – Please contact us if you have any questions or require additional information. HFSID 206973
