Description

EDGAR STIRLING AUCHINCLOSS, JR. His handwritten response to questions about the birth of his son and namesake Autograph Note signed: “Edgar Stirling Auchincloss, Jr.”, “Edgar”, 1 page, 8×10. Keewaydin, Darien, Connecticut, June 9, 1909. Responding to a handwritten inquiry from Clarence Day, New York City, about the name and date of his child, Auchincloss writes: [date of birth] “April 19th 1909”, [place of birth] “‘Keewaydin’, Darien, Conn.”, [name in full] “Edgar Stirling Auchincloss, Jr.” [He has named his son after himself, with the son now becoming the “Jr.”, so his full signature here is also his son’s name.] “Father & son doing well – also mother”. “A horrible thing to say, but I forgot all about you. You have brought it on yourself so don’t lay it up against me. The son is our 4th child, the other three being girls. Be a good boy, and forgive me for not sending you all the necessary information. Yours”. Edgar Stirling Auchincloss, Jr. (1874-1910) came from a prominent New York mercantile family. He died young, the year after the birth of his son announced here. He was the uncle of Hugh Auchincloss, the step-father of Jacqueline Onassis Kennedy and Lee Radziwill. Keewaydin, an estate built by his father, banker Edgar Stirling Auchincloss, Sr., was a name inspired by Longfellow’s poem “Song of Hiawatha.” The son announced here would contribute this land to what became the Country Club of Darien in 1956. Three horizontal and one vertical fold. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition. – Please contact us if you have any questions or require additional information. HFSID 300092
