Description

THOMAS SCHERMAN The conductor and founder of The Little Orchestra Society writes a letter of response, saying that he appreciates the recipient’s effort in writing to him, but would be more inclined to speak more if she could spell his and his orchestra’s name correctly. Extremely rare! Typed letter signed: “Thomas K. Scherman”, in black ink, 8×11. February 7, 1968. In part: “Dear Stella Hershan: I appreciate your letter about Mrs. Roosevelt in connection with the recording of “Hello, World” by the Little Orchestra Society in conjunction with her. May I point out to you that the conductor on that record was Thomas Scherman. I would be more inclined to share with you the enormously exciting experiences I had in making that record if you would guarantee that any mention of my last name would be spelled correctly…”. Conductor Thomas Scherman (1917-1979) studied at Columbia University before he began his studying conducting under Carl Bamberger and Otto Klemperer, becoming an assistant to Klemperer at the New School for Social Research in New York. He briefly served in the Army, reaching the rank of captain, and then went on to work in Mexico as assistant conductor of the National Opera. In 1947, he organized what became known as the Little Orchestra Society, and served as it’s conductor until his death. The orchestra performed primarily in New York, but toured internationally as well, and is still ongoing today under different direction. Normal mailing folds. Toned. Corners slightly worn and creased. Left margin creased back. Moisture damage at top margin, rippling and staining sheet. Paper remnants on verso. Surface creases throughout.
