Description

JAMES R. “ROBBIE” RISNER The Brigadier General responds to a letter regarding his opinion on the Gulf War, saying President Bush has handled it well by letting military leaders run it, and not making a mistake such as the Korean and Vietnam wars Typed letter signed: “Robbie Risner”, in black ink, 1 page, 7¼x10½. April 5, 1991. Austin, Texas. In full: “Dear Bill, Thanks for your letter of March 25. You raised a good point and I will comment. As you may recall, both the Korean and Vietnamese wars were pretty much run from the White House and by the Secretary of Defense. This was a bad mistake and we are still suffering from the Vietnam trauma. This war was run correctly. Pres. Bush informed his military leaders of his objectives and let the war experts (military leaders) conduct the war. I believe the unprecedented success in the Pershin Gulf showed how a war could and should be fought and served to balance the scales which had been badly knocked askew by Wietnam. Hope this helps. Sincerely”. James R. “Robbie” Risner (1925-2013) of the 336th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Interceptor Wing, shot down eight MiG-15s over Korea. In April 1965, while flying in combat over North Vietnam, he was shot down but rescued. Five months later, in September 1965, Risner was shot down a second time and captured. A Prisoner of War for seven years, Risner was the senior Air Force officer held at the infamous “Hanoi Hilton”. He was finally repatriated in February 1973. Before Risner retired as a Brigadier General in 1976, he was Commander of the USAF Tactical Fighter Weapons Center at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. Normal mailing folds. Corners slightly worn.
